Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), widely referred to as “mad cow disease,” was first diagnosed in 1986 in Great Britain. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) continues to work with federal and state partners to conduct surveillance and to prevent the introduction of BSE from foreign sources.
